Common - Finding Forever (LP)
What a fantastic album; although it definitely has a more commercial feel to it than Common’s previous offerings with tunes like “The People”, “Driving Me Wild” (featuring Lily Allen) and “Play Your Cards Right”; But don’t let this fool you.
I think the beauty of Common is that his albums are all so different, you don’t really know what to expect. This appeals to my taste as it is a great lo-fi hip-hop album. I can imagine that die hard Common fans might not like “Finding Forever” as much as previous albums, because of its more commercial value. I must admit I did raise an eyebrow at the Lily Allen track, but it works, believe me! My favourite track would most likely be “So Far To Go” (featuring D’angelo and produced by J Dilla); I cannot put into words how good this song is and I don’t think I will ever tire of hearing it; with a winning combination like this, it was always going to be a great tune. I also love “Forever Begins” (feat Lonnie Lynn) - another gorgeous track with great instrumentation and words of wisdom from daddy Common! “I Want You” is again ANOTHER great tune and “Black Maybe” feat Bilal is also near the top of my favourites.
The album is rounded off nicely with “Play Your Cards Right”(catch the video to this if you get the chance) I don’t really have anything negative to say about it other than it would be nice to have a few more tracks. “Finding Forever” is wicked; Common never fails to disappoint!
