Eric Roberson (Erro) - Left (LP)
I can’t praise this album enough- it’s SO good, if you are a neo-soul fan you should definitely go Left! I have found the more I listen to it the more I appreciate it, It’s an album that grows on you, but to those new to this stuff – please just give it a chance.
Unfortunately it is inevitable that we compare artists to their prior albums. In Eric Roberson’s case he has a lot to live up to having given life to songs like “Rock With You” and “Please Don’t Leave Me”, but “Left” is just as good and has to be my personal favourite of Eric Roberson’s albums.
It is – of course - so difficult to pick a favourite track but I think the best tunes are “Pretty Girl” (produced by J Dilla), “Too Soon”, “If I Had The Chance” and “Been in love” (featuring a guest rap by Phonte of Little Brother fame). “Pen Just Cries Away” is also perfect and the “Baby Song” is just beautiful – within this song lives one of the cutest lines in music history. “Open Your Eyes”, is also one to skip to and bears a striking similarity to a Stevie Wonder tune. Eric Roberson sums up his love for singing in the track that starts the album: “Music”, yet another great tune.
It’s really refreshing to hear an artist who does what he does for the love of the music, and spreads a positive message in what he sings, and because of this he makes you listen. I remember I once referred to Eric Roberson as good background music and a little boring, how wrong was I! “Left” works so well as an album for me, because it is a perfect mix of ballads and more upbeat tunes, and with a voice and talent like this the result is nothing short of flawless. Please buy this album; you need it in your life!
